Vermont Technical College recently announced they will officially become one of the growing number of 100% tobacco-free college campuses on July 1st, 2018! In preparation for their new smoke-free campus the college has increased the tobacco cessation support on campus and is now including tobacco-free messaging in all their communications.
This state technical college adapted their summer and fall orientation for new students to include information about the tobacco-free campus policy and how students can access support to quit smoking. They have informed all their outside venders of the policy change and included language in contracts that discourages use of tobacco at this time in preparation for the new policy next year.
The 2012 US Surgeon General’s report states that only 1% of smokers begin smoking after their 26th birthday, making the time that students are enrolled in college and university campuses a critical target for tobacco cessation and prevention efforts. Congratulations to VTC for supporting the future success of your students by going tobacco-free!
